Does Paying the Jail Fine Count as a Normal Turn in Monopoly?
Does Paying the Jail Fine Count as a Normal Turn?
Yes. After paying the fine or using a Get Out of Jail Free card, your turn proceeds exactly as if it had just started.
What Happens After You Pay
Once you pay $50 (or play your card) at the start of your turn:
- You roll the dice
- You move the number of spaces shown
- You perform the action on the space you land on (buy property, pay rent, draw a card, etc.)
- If you roll doubles, you get another turn — just like any normal turn
The Only Exception: Rolling Doubles to Escape
If you got out of jail by rolling doubles (without paying), the rules are slightly different:
- You move the number shown on the dice
- Your turn ends — you do not get the usual bonus roll for doubles
Why This Matters
Some players mistakenly treat paying the fine as “using up” their turn. But the rules are clear — paying the fine is just the cost of unlocking a full, regular turn. You’d never be forced to both pay money and skip your turn.
This makes the strategic choice clear: paying early to get back into the game gives you full flexibility, while waiting for doubles is a gamble with full turns at stake.
