Can Players Bid in Auctions While in Jail?

Yes, players can absolutely participate in auctions while in jail. This is one of the most commonly misunderstood rules in Monopoly.

According to the official rules, being in jail only restricts two things:

  • You cannot move around the board
  • You cannot collect $200 for passing Go

What You Can Still Do From Jail

A player in jail retains all other rights, including:

  • Bid in auctions — when any player lands on an unowned property and declines to buy it, all players (including jailed ones) can bid
  • Buy and sell property through trades
  • Build houses and hotels on complete color sets
  • Collect rent from other players landing on your properties
  • Trade with other players
  • Mortgage and unmortgage properties

How Auctions Work With Jailed Players

  1. A player lands on an unowned property and refuses to buy it at face value
  2. The Banker starts an auction open to all players
  3. The jailed player can make bids just like everyone else
  4. If the jailed player wins, they pay their bid and receive the title deed

Being in jail during an auction can even be strategically advantageous — you’re protected from landing on opponents’ properties while still growing your portfolio.
